SIL Translator’s Notes on Ecclesiastes 7:10

7:10a Do not say, “Why were the old days better than these?”

Do not ask, “How is it that things were good in the old days but are not today?”
-or-
Do not say that everything was better in the past.
-or-
Do not ask why the old days were better than the present, (Revised English Bible)

7:10b For it is unwise of you to ask about this.

A wise person would not say something like that.
-or-
It is not wise to talk in this way.
-or-
for that is a foolish question. (Revised English Bible)

7:10a-b (combined)

Don’t say, “Life was better in the ‘good old days.’ What happened?” Wisdom does not lead us to ask that question. (English Easy-to-Read Version)

Don’t long for the good old days. This is not wise.
-or-
It is not wise to ask, “Why were the former days better than these?”
