the man gave them his attention: As a response to Peter’s command the man began looking at Peter and John. He waited to see what they would do. Here are some other ways to translate this clause:
The man looked at them (New Century Version)

He turned to them expectantly (New Jerusalem Bible)
expecting to receive something from them: Other people usually gave the man money, because he begged for money there. So he expected Peter and John to give him money as well. Here are some other ways to translate these words:
hoping that they would give him something (Phillips’ New Testament in Modern English)

Expecting a gift from them (Revised English Bible)
