he saw Peter and John about to enter: Peter and John were about to enter the temple courts.

he asked them for money: In some languages it may be more natural to use direct speech. For example:

he asked them, “Would you please give me some money?”
-or-
he said to them, “Please give me some money.”

asked them for money: The Greek is more literally “was asking to receive an act of mercy.” The Greek ending on the verb probably indicates that this man asked more than once. Usually “an act of mercy” was a gift of money. Here are some other ways to translate these words:

was asking them for a charitable gift
-or-
was begging them for money
