SIL Translator’s Notes on Acts 27:11

27:11a–b

the centurion was persuaded by the pilot and by the owner of the ship: This verse does not say what the centurion decided. In some languages it is necessary to say what he decided. For example:

followed the advice of the pilot and of the owner of the ship ⌊regarding sailing further with the prisoners⌋

was persuaded: The Greek word here refers to being persuaded by someone’s opinion about something. The centurion listened to what various people said and thought what the pilot and owner said was the best opinion. Other ways to translate this phrase are:

paid more attention to (Revised Standard Version)
-or-
followed the advice (New International Version)
-or-
listened more to (New Living Translation (2004))

the pilot and by the owner of the ship: At that time, the pilot steered the ship, but the owner was the highest authority over the ship.
