SIL Translator’s Notes on Acts 2:32

Paragraph 2:32–35

2:32a

God has raised this Jesus to life: This clause implies that Jesus is the Christ. God raised him and this fulfilled the prophecy about the Christ that Peter just spoke about in 2:30–31.

The phrase this Jesus is emphasized in the Greek text. Emphasizing the phrase helps with the implied information that Jesus is the Christ. Here are some other ways to translate this clause:

It is this Jesus that God has raised to life,
-or-
So Jesus is the One whom God raised from the dead. (New Century Version)
-or-
Now Jesus has been raised by God, (Revised English Bible)

Peter only implied that Jesus is the Christ here because he wanted to say it plainly only at the end of his speech (2:36b).

this Jesus: The Greek phrase that the Berean Standard Bible translates as this Jesus indicates that Peter was continuing to talk about the same person. Here are some other ways to translate this phrase:

this very Jesus (Good News Translation)
-or-
this man Jesus (New Jerusalem Bible)

2:32b

to which we are all witnesses: This phrase indicates that Peter and others had actually seen Jesus and been with him after he had become alive again. So they could tell other people what they knew personally about Jesus and his being alive again. Here are some other ways to translate this phrase:

of that we all are witnesses (Revised Standard Version)
-or-
we all witnessed the fact ⌊that he is alive again⌋

we: Here the pronoun we refers to Jesus’ followers but not to the crowd of Jews to whom Peter was speaking.
