the churches were strengthened in the faith: This clause is passive. Some languages must use an active or intransitive clause here. For example:
⌊Paul and the others⌋ strengthened the churches in the faith

⌊Paul and the others⌋ encouraged the churches to believe ⌊in the Lord⌋ more completely
-or-
the churches ⌊in the various towns⌋ believed more ⌊in Jesus⌋
strengthened in the faith: This phrase refers to believing in Jesus more completely. The believers began following and obeying Jesus even more than before. See the examples above.
16:5b
grew daily in numbers: This phrase indicates that more and more people believed in Jesus. Other ways to translate this phrase are:
grew larger every day (New Century Version)

each day more people put their faith in the Lord (Contemporary English Version)
