SIL Translator’s Notes on Acts 15:26

15:26

This verse tells the reader more about Paul and Barnabas. In some languages it is necessary or more natural to translate this as a separate sentence for the correct meaning. For example:

These men have risked their lives for our Lord Jesus Christ. (Contemporary English Version)

who have risked their lives: The Greek word that the Berean Standard Bible translates as risked refers to putting something into the hands of another. Paul and Barnabas put their lives into God’s hands. They decided to serve him regardless of what happened to them. This would include people trying to kill them because they preached about Jesus. Other ways to translate this clause are:

who have committed their lives (New Jerusalem Bible)
-or-
dedicated their lives (God’s Word)
-or-
who have given their lives to serve (New Century Version)

for the name of our Lord Jesus Christ: This phrase indicates that Paul and Barnabas devoted themselves to doing things that honored Jesus. They preached about him to people who had not heard about him. By his power and authority they did miracles. And they did many other things to honor him. Other ways to translate this are:

to the cause of our Lord Jesus Christ (Revised English Bible)
-or-
to serve our Lord Jesus Christ (New Century Version)
-or-
to honor our Lord Jesus Christ

Christ: The word Christ is a title for Jesus. It means “the anointed one.” The Hebrew word mashiah (English: “Messiah”) has the same meaning. The Jews used it to refer to the special person God promised to send.

Some ways to translate Christ are:

Use a title or a descriptive phrase in your language that has the same meaning as Christ. For example:

Messiah
-or-
Promised Deliverer
-or-
the Rescuer-King whom God sent

Transliterate Christ and include a phrase that explains the meaning. For example:

Karisiti, the appointed one
-or-
Cristo, the Savior whom God promised to send

Transliterate Christ and indicate in some way that it is a title. For example:

the Kirisita

See how you translated this word in 2:31 or 11:17.
