SIL Translator’s Notes on Ecclesiastes 2:11

2:11a Yet when I considered all the works that my hands had accomplished

Then I thought about everything I had done
-or-
But when I turned to look at all that I had accomplished (God’s Word)

2:11b and what I had toiled to achieve,

and all that I had worked so hard to accomplish.
-or-
and all the hard work I had put into it, (God’s Word)

2:11c I found everything to be futile, a pursuit of the wind;

I realized that it was all pointless. It was just like chasing the wind.
-or-
I saw that it was all useless. It was like trying to catch the wind. (God’s Word)
-or-
I realized that ⌊my work⌋ had no benefit. ⌊I was⌋ just trying to control where the wind blows.

2:11d there was nothing to be gained under the sun.

I gained nothing ⌊from all that I accomplished⌋ in this world.
-or-
None of the things that I had done had any value. (EASY2015)

2:11a-d (combined)

Then I thought about everything I had done, including the hard work, and it was simply chasing the wind. Nothing on earth is worth the trouble. (Contemporary English Version)
-or-
But then I looked over everything my hands had done. I saw what I had worked so hard to get. And nothing had any meaning. It was like chasing the wind. Nothing was gained on this earth. (New International Reader’s Version)
