The word for Food is quite general, referring to anything that is eaten.

Will not commend us to God: the image is that of making someone able to stand upright, as in the presence of the king. This clause may be rendered as “will not make us have a better relationship with God” or “will not cause God to accept us more than he did before.”

No worse off and no better off are nonfigurative translations of the Greek, which carries on the reference to feeding: “We neither go without anything if we do not eat, nor do we have plenty if we eat.”
