Translation commentary on 2 Maccabees 15:22

Verses 22-24 contain the prayer of Judas.

And he called upon him in these words: This clause introduces his prayer. Good News Bible says simply “Judas said.” We may also say “Judas prayed.”

O Lord, thou didst send thy angel in the time of Hezekiah king of Judea, and he slew fully a hundred and eighty-five thousand in the camp of Sennacherib: See 2~Kgs 19.35 and Isa 36.37; see also 1Macc 7.41. The Greek word translated Lord is not the usual word, so New English Bible and New Jerusalem Bible distinguish it by translating “Master,” but this is unnecessary. The camp of Sennacherib may be rendered “King Sennacherib’s men” (Good News Bible) or “troops that belonged to King Sennacherib” (Contemporary English Version).

Good News Bible provides a helpful model for this whole verse.
