Translation commentary on 2 Maccabees 11:36

But as to the matters which he decided are to be referred to the king, as soon as you have considered them, send some one promptly: The Roman delegation wants to know the Judean reaction to King Antiochus’ proposals as soon as possible. Lysias has, or soon will, refer certain questions to the king (verse 18). The king will respond, and Judas will then be in a position of letting the king know if he accepts the terms offered. It is at this point that the Romans want to be informed.

So that we may make proposals appropriate for you: The Romans want to offer the king advice that will favor the Jews.

For we are on our way to Antioch: By telling Judas that they are now on their way to Antioch, they let him know where to send them a message, and impress on him that he should act as soon as possible. Good News Bible places this final clause at the beginning of the verse, which is helpful.

Here is an alternative model for this verse:

• We may be able to help you with King Antiochus, for we are on our way to see him in Antioch. So, regarding the matters that Lysias is referring to the king, as soon as you receive the king’s answer and have had time to think about it, please let us know your response immediately.
