But you …: The connector But is not necessary (see Good News Bible). The pronoun you is singular in Greek. Now the boy is addressing the king, and it is appropriate to make that clear in translation by saying “You, O King Antiochus…” or “King Antiochus, you….”

Who have contrived all sorts of evil against the Hebrews: Contrived all sorts of evil may be rendered “thought up all kinds of cruel things” (Good News Bible). The Hebrews refers to the boy’s own people, so Good News Bible says “our people.”

Will certainly not escape the hands of God: The hands of God refers to God’s punishment (compare 2Macc 6.26).

Here is an alternative model for this verse:

• King Antiochus, you have thought of [or, thought up] all kinds of cruel things to do to our people. But God is going to punish you for it [or, what you have done], and you cannot [or, will not be able to] escape.
