Translation commentary on 1 Maccabees 14:49

And to deposit copies of them in the treasury, so that Simon and his sons might have them: Apparently, important documents were kept in the Temple treasury (see John 8.20 for the translation of this place. His sons refers to any of Simon’s descendants who might serve as High Priest (see verse 41). For might have them, Good News Bible has “would have access to them.” It would have been normal practice to give a copy of the document to the person being honored, so this phrase may be taken more literally than Good News Bible has done. An alternative model for this verse is:

• They also decided to place copies of the documents in the Temple treasury. These would be the possessions of Simon and his descendants.
