Translation commentary on 1 Maccabees 14:45

Whoever acts contrary to these decisions or nullifies any of them shall be liable to punishment: This is the last in the series of proclaimed regulations that began in verse 41. An alternative model for this verse is:

• (9) Anyone who disobeys these provisions or treats them as invalid shall be subject to punishment [or, will be punished].

Opinions differ concerning where the inscription beginning in verse 27 ends. Revised Standard Version, An American Translation, and Goldstein have it end with verse 45, so that verses 46-49 are the writer’s comments. Good News Bible, New English Bible, Revised English Bible, New American Bible, and La Bible Pléiade have the inscription continue through verse 47, with only verses 48-49 as the writer’s added comments. New Jerusalem Bible, Traduction œcuménique de la Bible, and Abel understand the inscription to continue all the way through verse 49. Translators may choose among these options. Our own preference is to follow Good News Bible, and the following discussion will assume that verses 46-47 are the closing sentences of the inscription, beginning a new paragraph.
