When Judas learned of it, he went out to meet him, and he defeated and killed him: Judas and his men attack and defeat the enemy army. Apollonius is among those killed. It is fair to proceed on the assumption that Judas killed this enemy leader (so Good News Bible).

Many were wounded and fell, and the rest fled: Many refers to many of the Gentile and Samaritan soldiers. Good News Bible again includes the Samaritans among the Gentiles by saying “Many Gentiles.” A better model is “Many Gentiles and Samaritans.” Were wounded and fell means they were wounded and died. This phrase may be rendered simply “lost their lives.”

An alternative model for this verse is:

• When Judas learned about this, he and his soldiers attacked Apollonius and his army. They defeated them and killed Apollonius. Many Gentiles and Samaritans were killed and the rest fled.
