Translation commentary on 1 Maccabees 2:60

Daniel because of his innocence: The Greek word translated innocence is used in the same sense as in verse 37. For this whole phrase Good News Bible and New English Bible have “Daniel was a man of integrity,” which is a good translation.

Was delivered from the mouth of the lions: Translators trying to follow the author in avoiding the words “God” or “Lord” should use caution in following Good News Bible here. Translators who must show who rescued Daniel may say “and Heaven [or, the One in Heaven] rescued him from the hungry lions.”
