Some (Revised Standard Version, New Jerusalem Bible) connect verse 6 with what precedes; most, like Good News Translation, connect it with what follows. This seems better.

The watches of the night were three periods of four hours each, assigned to watchmen who guarded the city. The psalmist’s intense devotion to God is therefore shown by the fact that “all night long” (Good News Translation), as he lies in bed, he remembers what God has done for him and thinks about him (meditate; same verb as in 1.2).

In an exquisite statement of dependence and security, the psalmist says to God “I cling to you” (literally “my nefesh keeps close to you”), and “your right hand holds me fast,” a vivid expression of human trust and divine care. My soul clings to thee may be rendered, for example, “I hold on to you with all my strength”; negatively this may be said “I will not let go of you.” Thy right hand as a symbol of God’s might may be translated “your mighty hand protects me.”
