Translation commentary on Proverbs 29:13

This saying is similar in thought to 22.2.

“The poor man and the oppressor meet together”: “The oppressor” is literally “man of injuries.” In relation to “The poor”, “the oppressor” may refer to a creditor or moneylender. The Septuagint has “creditor and debtor. . ..” “Meet together” is as in 22.2. See there for comments.

“The Lord gives light to the eyes of both”: As in Job 3.16, “gives light” means “gives life” or “enables to live.” This saying may be expressed, for example, “The poor person and the one who mistreats him have this in common: the Lord gives life to them both.”
