16:5a
Greet also the church that meets at their house: Here the word church refers to the group of believers that met in the house of Prisca and Aquila. It is implied that this group met every week to worship God. It is not known if they met more than once a week. Here are other ways to translate this clause:
Also greet the believers who meet in their house
-or-
announce my greeting to all the believers in the Lord Yesus who hold-services in their house
-or-
Greet also all of the believers who meet together in their house to worship God
Greet: Translate this word as you did in 16:3. This word is used with the same meaning in 16:6–15.
16:5b
my beloved Epenetus: This phrase indicates that Paul loved Epenetus as a Christian brother. Here are other ways to translate this phrase:
Epenetus, whom I love
-or-
my dear brother ⌊in Christ⌋, Epenetus
-or-
my dear friend Epenetus (New International Version)
who was the first convert to Christ in the province of Asia: This further describes Epenetus. It does not separate this Epenetus from other men named Epenetus. For the correct meaning in some languages, the word who must be replaced with something else and possibly a new sentence started. For example:
and he was the first convert to Christ in the province of Asia
-or-
He was the first convert to Christ in the province of Asia
the first convert to Christ in the province of Asia: This means that Epenetus was the first person in Asia to leave his previous religious beliefs and believe in Jesus.
the province of Asia:
At that time the name Asia referred to a region in what is now the western part of the country of Turkey. But in English the name now refers to a much larger region very far east of Turkey that includes the country of China.
The Berean Standard Bible adds the phrase the province of to indicate the old meaning. You may also want to explain its meaning in a footnote. Here is an example footnote:
At that time, the name Asia referred to a province under Roman rule that was across the Aegean Sea east of Greece. It was in the western part of what is now the country of Turkey.
