SIL Translator’s Notes on 1 Corinthians 1:28

1:28a He chose the lowly and despised things of the world,

(Good News Translation) He chose what the world looks down on

God chose what the people of the world think is not important and things that people do not honor,
-or-
God chose what seems humble according to our human standards. He chose what is despised/scorned,

1:28b and the things that are not,

(NET Bible) what is regarded as nothing

the worthless things,
-or-
in other words, the things the world considers as nothing,
-or-
what human standards consider valueless,

1:28c to nullify the things that are,

in order to bring to nothing the things that are
-or-
to abolish/do away with what is ⌊valued by the world⌋.
