Introduction to Philippians

(Pioneer Bible Translators and The Word for the World use the following introduction in many of their translation projects around the world.)

Paul wrote the letter to the believers in Philippi around 61 years after the birth of Christ. He wrote it while he was in prison (1:13), probably in Rome. The letter was written to the church located in the city of Philippi. We can learn a little bit about Philippi from the book of Acts. Philippi was the capital city of the province in Macedonia. It was also the first church that was established in Macedonia. Paul and Silas started the church together and were even put in prison for a night while they were there (Acts 16).

Paul may have had several purposes in writing this letter. He used the occasion to thank the church for the gift they sent when they heard that he was in prison (4:1019). He also updated them on his situation in prison and recommended Timothy and Epaphroditus to the church (2:1930) so that they would welcome them and respect their leadership.

Outline:

1. Paul starts the letter by greeting the church in Philippi (1:1-2).
2. Next he shares some information about his situation and some concerns that he has (1:3-2:30).
3. Then he gives several practical instructions for Christian living (3:1-4:9).
4. Paul finishes by thanking the Philippian church for their gift and sending his greetings (4:10-23).
