Introduction to Haggai

(Pioneer Bible Translators and The Word for the World use the following introduction in many of their translation projects around the world.)

This book contains four prophetic messages from Haggai. Haggai tells when he received each message (1:1, 2:1, 2:10, 2:20). The messages were given during a 4-month period in the year 520 B.C. At this time, the Persian empire had conquered the Babylonian empire and they were allowing the Jewish people to return to Jerusalem.

Haggai’s messages for the Jewish people criticized them for working on their own houses before they rebuilt the temple, the Lord’s house (1:4). God said that this is why they were not blessed and why their harvests were small. Then the people of Israel obeyed and finished the temple. God promised that the glory of the new temple would be greater than that of the previous one (2:9). He also promised to bless them.

Outline:

1. Chapter 1:1-1:15 contains Haggai’s first message and how the people responded.
2. Chapter 2:1-9 is Haggai’s second message.
3. Chapter 2:10-19 contains Haggai’s third message.
4. Chapter 2:20-23 is Haggai’s fourth message.
