As for Joppa and Gazara, which you demand, they were causing great damage among the people and to our land; for them we will give a hundred talents: Realizing that the claim to Joppa and Gezer might be questionable, Simon offers a compromise. Wishing to retain control over them since they represented a threat to Judea, he offers Antiochus a hundred talents for them, much less than Antiochus had demanded. For the “talent” as unit of money, see the comments on 1Macc 11.28, and compare verse 31. A possible model for these two sentences is “As for Joppa and Gezer, which you claim belong to you, the people of these cities have done great harm to our nation. For these towns we will give you 3,400 kilograms [or, 7,500 pounds] of silver.”
Athenobius did not answer him a word: This short statement can be easily worked into a longer sentence going into the next verse, as in both Revised Standard Version and Good News Bible. Good News Bible also has a paragraph break here, which is helpful.
