Alexander the king met him, and Ptolemy gave him Cleopatra his daughter in marriage: See the comments on verse 54.

And celebrated her wedding at Ptolemais with great pomp, as kings do: Good News Bible renders with great pomp, as kings do as “with royal splendor,” which is a good translation. Another approach, slightly closer to the Greek, for this whole clause is “The wedding took place there in Ptolemais, and the ceremony was very elaborate, as the weddings of kings’ daughters always are” or “In Ptolemais they had a very elaborate wedding, just as kings always do.”

This whole verse may be expressed as follows:

• King Alexander met him, and Ptolemy let him marry his daughter Cleopatra [or, let him take Cleopatra as his wife]. In Ptolemais there was an elaborate [or, splendid/fancy] wedding, just as kings always have.
