The Greek in John 11:53 that is translated as “they planned to put him to death” or similar in English is translated in the German New Testament translation by Berger / Nord (publ. 1999) as die jüdische Führungsschicht plante, Jesus umzubringen or “the Jewish leading class planned to kill Jesus.”
