Translation commentary on 1 Maccabees 11:6

Jonathan met the king at Joppa with pomp, and they greeted one another and spent the night there: Jonathan heard that Ptolemy was marching north along the coast, so he left Jerusalem to meet him by the time he arrived at Joppa, a city that Jonathan had captured only recently (see 1Macc 10.76). Meeting the king of Egypt with pomp (Good News Bible “with all the proper ceremony”) was intended not only to give Ptolemy the honor due a visiting king, but also to impress Ptolemy with the fact that Jonathan was in a position to arrange an impressive ceremony (see the comments on 1Macc 10.60). An alternative model for this verse is:

• Jonathan met Ptolemy at the town of Joppa, and honored the king with all the proper ceremony. After greeting each other, they spent the night there.
